Redesign

So this is all different...! My initial reaction at the new layout was somewhat negative, I must admit. I mean, I'm not happy with some aspects of it, such as the sucky new B/P levels, but generally it's pretty cool.

Considering the fact that this is supposed to be more 'Personal news', like a blog, I guess, I'm going to share some of my thoughts on the new layout with you all.

It's weird, having been here for 2+ years as a user, (and more as a general visitor), that suddenly I find myself having to work things out here again. This is exaccerbated by the fact that I'm usually in the Wi/Ht? forums telling people how stuff works around here. Now, it seems, I need to figure out how stuff DOES work around here, all over again.

Admittedly, It's not ALL different. Most things that I've grown to love are still here, and some other new and really cool things have been added. Despite the negatives, I really can't fault Tom and the NG team on the redesign, as it really does make it a better and cooler place to be.

Finally, a short list of my likes and dislikes concerning the redesign:

Likes

- Personal News on profile page
- Some of the new level icons
- The general new look of the site
- Forums
- The 2 new auras
- New emoticons
- Ability to post on the front page (despite spam)

Dislikes

- Profile Page layout could be better
- Some of the new level icons
- Most of the new B/P icons
- Weird new Pic/Sig Pic dimensions

That's all I can really think of for now. I hope everyone is enjoying the redesign, and their new levels! Now I have to go and make a new forum sig pic.

Yeah, all the pictures are odd dimensions (widescreen avatar?) but I think it all makes it look a lot more sleek. But definitely the B/P ranks aren't nearly as great, and the whistles are silly looking.

But of course, everything is better despite those little things.

The forum sigs are definitely way better suited to the layout of the forum, due to the fact that your sig can now stretch the entire length of the posting area. My only qualm with it was that I had to make a new sig =)

And yeah, a lot of things are better now, except the B/P icons. I'm not resting on that one!

I think almost all of the new levels kick ass, and I was a huge fan of some of the old levels (15, 16, 20, 24, 25). The new chain, new black-handle nunchaku, new swords (so many of 'em!) and new mallets are all pretty cool. I wish the mallet was still black like the old level 20.... and the new "level 25 golden gauntlet" is nowhere near as good as the old one. But for the most part? New level icons rock.

I totally agree with you that the new b/p icons pretty much blow, though.

As for the userpage layout being better: we're going to get to change the layout in our account options at some point. We can all have customised userpages at that point. They just haven't implemented that yet. I'm sure it's not at the top of the list either, with all the important bugs to fix first.

I think that immediately following the redesign, I found some of the new level icons a bit hard to really appreciate, but speaking presently, I think you're right, most of them are pretty well done. There are still a few that irritate me, though. I agree for definite that the new golden gauntlet has nothing on the old one. I'm really glad that the old level 20 hammer is back and looking better than ever (as is the old level 27 golden hammer).

As for the new B/P icons... well... they just don't have the charm of the old ones. When the redesign took place, I was only about 300 B/P away from my first gold Elite Guard badge on the old system, and regretfully, I never got there. Now I've lost the motivation to achieve any of the higher badges, as none of them are really worth having in my opinion (except perhaps the Commander and Supreme Commander badges).

And the user pages? Well, as I said to absent, I hope that we will be able to make our stats much more prominent than they are when the NG team sorts out the user page layout option.

i'll agree about the profile page layout, i noticed most people seemed to really like it, but in all honesty it seems a bit spread out with all the tables, yet with stat text somewhat small and pushed aside. eh.

My thoughts exactly - the stats just seem to be pushed away to the side. Hopefully, though, once we can customise our user pages, we'll be able to make the stats much more prominent!
