University, and life moving on.

Posted by NEVR Jun. 20, 2008 @ 10:50 PM EDT

Some of you may know that I applied for University this year after a somewhat uneventful year out from education. These same people may also know that I've now been accepted by my first choice University. For those who didn't know that... now you do.

A few days ago I finished all the admin work that needed to be completed before heading off in September. This basically consisted of filling out a big old form to get myself a student loan, contacting my University to inform them that I'm actually taking up the place they've offered me, and applying for accommodation.

The student loan form was the biggest job. Some parts of it were extremely vague, so I needed to contact my local council office to clear a few things up. It's one of those things that you worry about messing up (especially as I'd already messed up the first form and had to attain a second one). Took me ages to do because I did the second form in pencil first to avoid any serious mistakes, and then went over it in ink. Sounds silly, but I was seriously paranoid about messing up a second form and having to start all over again.

Applying for accommodation was fairly easy in comparison. All I had to do was fill a preference form on the University website. There's 3 types of accommodation available: Standard (single room with a sink, communal bathroom for every 7-10 rooms or so); En Suite (single room with a private bathroom); and Studio flats (for couples). I applied for En Suite, as I don't fancy sharing a bathroom with several other people. Can you blame me?

All there really is left to do at this point is wait for my loan to come through, and to find out what accommodation I've gotten. I'm hoping I'll get what I applied for, but I'll have to wait and see.

So yeah, basically. Life is moving on now. Come September, I'll be living in a different place, and generally living a different life. Hopefully it'll all be for the better - I'm sure it will.

Its an experience man, trust me. Best years of your life.

Jun. 21, 2008 | 1:47 PM NEVR responds:

I'm sure you're right... I'm really looking forward to it. Change of scenery is never a bad thing IMO.

Jun. 21, 2008 | 1:37 PM kidray76 says:

Yeah man, I had to have to agree with Joshiwa. This will probably be the best years of your life. I just finished college, and dorm life was FUCKING AWESOME. Had a room to myself, could come and go as I pleased, own phone, no one over me, and plus I had a meal plan so I always had something to eat.

If you have your own car and a side job like work study, be living the good life. I think if I was doing something school related, I was either playing video games, at a club drinking and partying, or getting laid. I mean, it's seriously easy to get laid if your a college man.

Litte advice from my experience, (probably know most of this, but hell, your an e-buddy :P)

1. STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM CREDIT CARDS UNLESS YOU HAVE TO (or can pay it off each month)

2. Apply for as many scholarships that you have a remote chance of getting.
3. Take as many hours as possible. First year easiest year. Basically just like a 13th grade for the most part.

4. I know they tell you for ever hour in class, study two hours out of class. But seriously, study as much as it takes to get the subject. Some classes I NEVER study for but still got an A.

5. Ask upperclass who to take for certain classes. GPA is everything when you first start. If a teacher is hard, might want to get the easier teachers. I know you probabyl don't want to cheat youreslf, but at the same time, strugging for an C is more hurt than breezing A when it comes to paying out of pocket.

6. Do the shit early. (I know u know this lol), If something is due next week, go ahead and get it done.

7. Pick your major NOW. Go ahead and decide your path. I know they say you can be undecided in till Junior year, but seriously, classes vary, and best to knock them out asap.

8. Be cheap. Look for alternative routes to getting things. Especially books. Sometimes you don't even a need a book for a class. Or you can just borrow a book from someone who has alreayd taken it. Buying books from the book store easily comes up to 500 dollars. But if you buy online or rent, might only spend about a 100.

9. Have fun man. Doesn't always have to be about work. Take advantage of all the extra things, activities.

10. Last thing, build relationships with teachers in your area. They will open doors for you than if you try to do it yourself. Sometimes not what you know, but WHO you know. Teachers can get you scholarships just from being a good student, so might not even need loans next year if you play you cards right.

Jun. 21, 2008 | 1:55 PM NEVR responds:

Wow, thanks for taking the time to write all that man - I really appreciate it. Some things are done slightly differently over here, though... for example, instead of choosing a major in your first or second year, we apply for a course and stick with it throughout the entire 3 years. There is room to convert to a different course if you dislike the current course you're on, and for some degrees (like law, which I'm hoping to ultimately study) they like you to do a year of a different subject first.

Credit cards - I think my bank have given me a student credit card, which has an overdraft of about £500. It's only really an emergency measure, and I'm not paying anything on it if I don't use it. It's basically there just in case I need money and have no other options. My student account has an interest free overdraft of £1,250 (which increases every year), so I should be OK, especially as I'm planning on getting some part time bar work or something while I'm there.

Everything else you've said makes a lot of sense though, and whilst I already know some of it, it's good to have someone tell me again so that I don't forget it.

I'm sure I'll have a great time, though. Congrats to you on just finishing, BTW, you must be pleased. My sister has also just finished university, but I think she's going back for another year to do a teaching course of some description.

Thanks again for the words of wisdom <3

Congratulations on that then.

My birthday is in september as well! :O

Jun. 21, 2008 | 2:49 PM NEVR responds:

Thanks, but I never said my birthday was in September - you must have misread something. My birthday is in October. ;P

Jun. 22, 2008 | 6:52 AM doberman7 says:

I need to learn to read before posting.

I didnt say your birthday was in september, I was saying that my birthday was in september of when you go to university.

Sorry for the cock-up, delete my last comment.

Jun. 22, 2008 | 7:42 AM NEVR responds:

I see. In the English language, you need to differentiate between the operative noun of the sentence (in this case 'birthday') if you begin referring to something else. The sentence:

'My birthday is in September as well'

Would denote that you've assumed my birthday to be in September. I imagine now that what you meant to say was 'my birthday is in September, which is the same month as you go to university', which is a completely different sentence.

So you see, you actually DID say that my birthday is in September within all normal parameters of the interpretation of the English language, you simply didn't intend to do so.

I'm leaving your last comment up there as otherwise none of this makes sense to anyone, and it's an amusing little incident. ;P

I'm hoping I'll get what I applied for, yeah... but there's not much I can really do to secure my preference, other than fill in the online preference form (which I've already done) and just hope for the best. Fingers crossed.

Also fuku deity is SHIT and common man! ;P

hey, how you doing?

Come to think of it sharing a bathroom with a bunch of guys was not that bad, but that was probably because the cleaning crew cleaned it everyday.

so i heard you liek B/PS

also beer

p.s. I hate to tell you but when you turn 20 in October you will be over the hill, there is no stopping it so get ready to join us.

Jul. 3, 2008 | 10:59 AM NEVR responds:

Good to hear from you man, I've been trying to catch you on AIM recently, to no avail.

Well, I'm not sure if there's a cleaning crew to take care of the bathroom for the uni I'm going to. I remember my sister's halls - they had one communal bathroom for the ladies, and one for the gents, and I think they had to clean theirs out themselves :/

I like B/Ps

I like beers

PS. I'm looking forward to turning to the dark side ;P
